Three people — two adults and a teenager — were hospitalized after a shooting outside the Macy’s store at Westfield Valley Fair mall in West San Jose on Black Friday, according to the San Jose Police Department.
Officers responded to reports of gunfire around 5:40 p.m. Initially, police confirmed two victims, but later said a third person was also found suffering from gunshot wounds. All three victims sustained injuries that are considered non-life-threatening, authorities said.
The shooting caused chaos inside the busy shopping center as crowds rushed to safety. A teen witness described the frightening moments to NBC Bay Area, recalling how shoppers ran for cover during the incident.
Police emphasized that the shooting appears to be an isolated incident and not an active shooter situation. However, officers evacuated and cleared the mall as a precaution to ensure there was no further threat to the public.
San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan addressed the incident in a statement Friday evening, saying:
“My prayers are with these victims… There is no ongoing threat to the community, but please avoid the area.”
Authorities are urging residents to stay away from the mall while the investigation continues.
