Oregon State University has named Alabama assistant JaMarcus Shephard as the new head coach of its struggling football program, the school announced on Friday. Shephard replaces Trent Bray, who was fired earlier this season after an 0–7 start.
Shephard, 42, has spent the past two years on Kalen DeBoer’s staff at Alabama, serving as assistant head coach, co-offensive coordinator, and wide receivers coach. Before joining the Crimson Tide, he worked under DeBoer at Washington and previously held positions at Purdue, Washington State, and Western Kentucky.
Oregon State Praises Shephard’s Leadership
Athletic director Scott Barnes called Shephard “a top-notch and genuine leader” whose values align with the university’s mission.
“His character and persona will make all of Beaver Nation proud… I cannot wait to see him on the recruiting trail and leading our football program to immediate success,” Barnes said.
Shephard will be officially introduced at a news conference on Tuesday.
Shephard’s Vision for the Beavers
In a statement, Shephard said he is honored to take over the program:
“We will build a culture rooted in toughness, integrity, and relentless effort… I’m excited to work with our players, staff, and supporters to write the next great chapter of Beaver football.”
Oregon State Looks to Rebuild
The Beavers are closing out their second consecutive losing season since former coach Jonathan Smith left for Michigan State. Oregon State and Washington State remain the only members of the former Pac-12 conference and have played independent schedules for two seasons.
A rebuilt Pac-12 Conference is scheduled to resume play in 2026.
Interim coach Robb Akey has led the team to a 2–2 record since Bray’s dismissal, with the Beavers entering Saturday’s final game at Washington State at 2–9.
Shephard’s Coaching Background
Shephard joined Alabama in February 2024 after Washington’s run to the national championship game. At Washington, he was the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach, helping develop an elite aerial attack featuring Michael Penix Jr. and Rome Odunze.
He played college football from 2001 to 2004 at Division III DePauw University, where he was a standout wide receiver and kick returner.
