Shopify faced major service disruptions on Cyber Monday, with the e-commerce giant confirming that some merchants were unable to process checkouts or access their admin dashboards during one of the biggest online shopping days of the year.
According to Shopify’s official status page, the platform experienced multiple outages, impacting both its online checkout system and point-of-sale (POS) services. The issues also affected merchant logins, preventing some businesses from accessing their storefront management tools.
The outage comes at a critical time for retailers. In 2024, Shopify-powered merchants generated $11.5 billion in sales from Black Friday through Cyber Monday, with more than 76 million shoppers purchasing from stores using the platform.
Potential Impact on Small Businesses
While Shopify represents only a portion of overall Cyber Monday sales, the outage poses a significant risk for small and mid-sized businesses that rely heavily on the platform to process payments during the holiday rush.
Total Cyber Monday spending is projected to exceed $53 billion, according to Salesforce — making any downtime costly for merchants competing for online traffic.
Shopify Stock Drops
As of 1:25 p.m. ET, Shopify shares were down 5%, reflecting investor concern over the platform’s performance during such a crucial sales window. The company has not yet issued a public comment beyond its service status updates.
