Los Angeles — James Ransone, the actor best known for his role as Ziggy Sobotka on HBO’s acclaimed series The Wire, has died at the age of 46.

According to online records from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office, Ransone died by suicide on Friday. No further details were immediately released.

Ransone, who grew up in Maryland — the same state where The Wire is set — became widely recognized for his portrayal of the troubled dockworker Ziggy during the show’s second season. His performance made him a standout character on the series and earned him a lasting place in television history.

In addition to The Wire, Ransone built a strong career as a character actor in both television and film. His movie credits included It: Chapter Two, The Black Phone, and Black Phone 2. He also appeared in popular TV shows such as Bosch and Poker Face.

Messages seeking comment were left Sunday for Ransone’s representatives, as well as for a spokesperson from the medical examiner’s office. No additional statements have been released.
