NEW YORK — Actor and comedian Michael Rapaport says he plans to run for mayor of New York City, making the announcement during a recent episode of his I Am Rapaport podcast and amplifying it days later on social media.
Kicking off the Jan. 5 episode with a tongue-in-cheek introduction, the 55-year-old declared, “My name is Michael Rapaport, a.k.a. Mayor Rapaport,” before explaining that ongoing political turmoil pushed him to consider a run.
“2025 was crazy, and I don’t see it getting any calmer or cooler in 2026,” Rapaport said. “That’s why I’m running for mayor.”
Sharp Attacks on Mayor Zohran Mamdani
Rapaport centered much of his announcement on criticism of Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic Socialist who was sworn in as New York City’s mayor on Jan. 1. The actor has been a vocal opponent of Mamdani since the 2025 Democratic primary, frequently using his podcast and media appearances to attack the mayor’s record and ideology.
During the episode, Rapaport used harsh language to deride Mamdani, predicting his administration would exceed “our wildest fears and expectations.” His criticism has often focused on Mamdani’s outspoken views on Israel.
Social Media Signals It’s More Than a Joke
While Rapaport is known for provocative commentary, he suggested the bid may be serious with a video posted to Instagram on Thursday.
“Born. Raised. NYC. Nothing’s free,” Rapaport wrote. “No fake grins. I’ll own my mistakes, apologize when I screw up, and fight to make this city safe, affordable, and thriving.”
He added, “You got Zoron [sic] the Moron now… Mayor Rapaport is coming.”
It remains unclear whether Rapaport will formally file paperwork to run or outline a policy platform beyond his criticisms of the current administration. Still, his early declaration injects celebrity spectacle into an already heated New York City political landscape.
