Manchester United have sacked manager Ruben Amorim after 14 months in charge, despite the club sitting sixth in the Premier League.
In a statement released on Monday, United said the decision was made “reluctantly” but insisted it was “the right time to make a change.” The club plans to appoint a caretaker manager for the remainder of the season before naming a permanent successor in the summer.
Former United midfielder Darren Fletcher, currently in charge of the club’s under-18s, will oversee Wednesday’s match against Burnley while the search for a caretaker continues.
Player Reaction
United defender Harry Maguire was among the first players to publicly react, posting on social media:
“Thank you for everything boss.”
Amorim himself was seen out in Manchester on Monday afternoon, taking what appeared to be a relaxed stroll following confirmation of his dismissal.
Why United Made the Decision
Sources have told BBC Sport that the club felt there had been insufficient evidence of tactical or structural evolution under Amorim. A “particularly negative meeting” with sporting director Jason Wilcox on Friday is believed to have accelerated the decision.
Although United are currently sixth — broadly in line with pre-season expectations — the club’s hierarchy reportedly felt the situation had become untenable, writes BBC Sport’s Simon Stone.
What Happens Next?
United are now weighing up short-term and long-term options. Several managers are currently out of work, including Gareth Southgate and Enzo Maresca, while a number of high-profile coaches are expected to become available after the summer and following the World Cup.
Fan Reaction Split
Supporters remain divided over the timing of Amorim’s dismissal.
One fan, Andy, said Amorim “should have gone weeks ago,” while another, Maureen, described the decision as “disgraceful.”
United’s next steps — both on the pitch and in the boardroom — will now be closely scrutinized as the club looks to stabilize its season and reset once again.
